Tarngate Cottage
Cruck
Little Thornton
1977
Am not sure whether this is still standing as will have to go and have a look see and am also not sure if the 'Cruck' is referring to the type of building or a place. Anybody have any ideas? I've also added another memory item about Christ Church regarding a very peculiar tax.

ReplyDeleteit,s quality that counts, and good things come to he that waits. "1977" i was in me prime then, it,s been all up hill from then on.
I was 9 and remember it was the Queens Silver Jubilee year. We went up to a farm in the lakes for the whole six weeks of the summer hols every year. The whole village (about 10 houses) had a big party. A whole pig was roasted and we sat on straw bales in a field and partied country style. Everyone had to dress in red, white and blue. It was a very good year I remember.
ReplyDeleteall the 9 year olds nowadays are all standing on street corners swigging cider, you would never get them to do what we did. went up to lancaster last weekend where they were roasting a full pig in the street best butty i have had in a long while.
ReplyDeleteThat's just what Thornton needs ... A hog roast. Am hungry now

If only I hadn't stopped to feed the cat. That flea-bitten moggy's getting booted out in the morning.
Incidentally, that Tarngate Cottage could well be a crook frame construction. On the other hand, perhaps the postcard was sent by an Australian and it was just his/her way of saying that it was knackered.
ReplyDeleteThat flea-bitten moggy's getting booted out in the morning. Lol
ReplyDeleteRe- hog roast i think it would go down well at the farmers market
RE Tarn Gate Cottage I lived in the last house in School Rd on the Corner of Tarn Rd since 1934 and My grand parents have lived on the other end of Tarn Rd(Hornbys corner,) since the 1920, There was an old barn and pig sty at the back of their land but thats not it. I carn't place that building or any other like it,Nor can my wife who has lived at No1 Silcocks cottages since the early 50s, the only old building was on the corner of Lambs Rd,and'Skippool Rd,(the Old lodge Farm Building) and thats not it.
ReplyDeleteHmmm interesting .. perhaps it's been named wrong
ReplyDeleteRe; Tarn Gate Cottage. I know a Tarn Gate Farm, It was off a track leading off Tarn Rd between the Bungalows set back in what was an orchard, and the first 1930s semi on your right just after School Rd,I think it was known as Singletons farm in my day, but I may have got the name wrong.
ReplyDeleteHad my leg fixed now my memory's playing up.
Hi James
ReplyDeleteYes I've heard of Tarngate Farm and I think it is still standing. From the looks of the building in the photo it's probably not still standing. Perhaps it was a farm workers cottage attached to the farm? Unfortunately there isn't anything else visible in the picture to locate it. I need to go and have a look but it is one of those places where the road goes nowhere and everyone looks at you like a prospective burglar !
its about 100yards down the track to the right,I seem to remember a pair of semi's (1930s built for the farm workers to the rear of the farm, knew one of the sons name of Ralph, very unusual name around these parts at that time,BTW i think the new member is my No2 daughter I'll have to be on my best behaviour from now on.
