Answers on a Postcard

Well I managed to get Thornton's Top 10 Oldest on last night and decided to split it into 'Buildings' and 'Houses'. Thats the good news, the bad news is my local knowledge is officially pants as I could only think of 2 places and I used one of those more than once! I still have to investigate whether the cottages at Nook are still standing but its difficult to have a proper look without looking like I'm casing the joint. So please keep your eyes open when wandering around .. answers on a postcard.

I've added details on Fleetwood Road Methodist Church today and have been tinkering with some of the pictures. I've been back 3 times to the railway now at different times of day and can't seem to get a picture that isn't either: a) in the shade or b) containing blokes in orange jackets. When the weather gets warmer I will camp out in the Bay Horse beer garden waiting my moment .. all in the interest of the site of course.

  1. Where's Nook?

Incidentally, there's a cottage/shop on Rossall Road in Cleveleys (near the traffic lights...it might be the place that sells tyres...it's one of those buildings along that streth anyhow) that, if memory serves, dates back to seventeen hundred and odd. Worth checking out. There's a date stone above the door I seem to recall.

And there's another old cottage at the end of Crabtree Road in Thornton...again, can't remember how old it is now, or what it's called, but it's definitely not modern.

  2. Hi Brian

The cottage at the end of Crabtree is Poolfoot Cottage which is one I have as it is on the dog walking route. Am not including the Rossall Road one as that is enemy territory !!

Nook cottages are on Meadows Ave on the right just after you turn in from Victoria Rd. I only spotted them the other day as I thought they had been pulled down.

Ah...thought it might have been, but I wasn't sure.

"Am not including the Rossall Road one as that is enemy territory !!"

    The dreaded Ritherham!

Don't forget Raikes Farm on Raikes Road. 1790 that one, I think.

  8. THE Old barn (The old Stables from Lodge Farm.) at Hornbys corner skippool Rd has a Key Stone dating back to the 1700s,Now covered by a Clock.
I used to drive a Tractor for Cliff Morris Agriculture Contractor at the farm at the corner of Woodlands& Rosendale, kept cows in what is now Hatfield Close,(I wonder if it was called Hatfield because Cliff was never seen without
    his battered trilby

  11. Anonymous...by the barn with the clock on it, would you be refering to the old blacksmith's on the corner of School Road opposite Raikes Road?

  12. Was used for a short time by a Farier in the 80s
the 3 horse stalls were there in the 1930s,
At present has been turned into a holiday home, prior to that was used by Tommy Sewell an old friend of mine He lived next door to my Grans,
he had geese, kept corn, feed, ect; in the old stable. In the 1940s it was used by Alf Braid(another Braid that name keeps cropping up)who had a poultry farm at the rear when i was 11 or 12yrs old i used to collect eggs and let the hens out of app;20 cabins before i went to school, then feed, grit, and waterin the evening before locking them up for night, 7 days a week for the princely sum of 5 shillings which was not a bad rate in those days.

Talk about the good old days.
in between helping with the harvest
No pay, part of the war effort.

  14. THe romour was that the farrier was not fully Qualified, and thats why he left,

re Bretherton they were all owned by TB Silcock
Remember the one of the Poole Families lived in the one next to raikes farm the farmer was Henry Armitage his Brother Ernie Farmed just off School Rd had a pedigree heard of Jersey cows was related to his wife through m mothers side of the family I think everyone was related in some way or the other on the farming comunity in those days.very close knit comunity, if you sneezed ion Poulton your mother had the Goose grease and brown paper out when you got home.

  15. Anonymous,

Apparently the same is still true today in Pilling. Somebody told me once that if you kick one of them the whole village feels it. That's not my observation, I should add...the good folk of Pilling have always been very pleasant with me, despite the fact that it's been said they don't have family trees over that way, just stumps.

  18. No1 & 2 Silcocks cottages on Skippool Rd could Qualify Like Hills Cottages at Hornbys Corner both were originaly built of cobblestones 1&2 Silcocks was originaly a farm house with an attached shippon, was owned by my wife from app; 1954 when bought of T B Silcock until 1979 during that time a brick outer walled was built around the propert,.athough the original cobbled walls are still inside, until app 1979.

posiblly the oldest farm house would have been Criers Pig farm on Wood house Rd, now demolished
and a bungalow built in its place, by Bill Crier Sadly no longer with us,also the old white cottages at the bottom of Lambs Hill oposite what was ST Johns Mission Hut tin roof and all.

well thats progress are times any better though?

  19. Thanks for the information James

Now as technically No. 1&2 Silcocks cottages are not as built and are now made of modernish bricks, I don't think they can go on the list but I will definately look at Hills Cottages on Hornby's corner.

    Thanks again for the information.

  22. Hi James

I actually drove past Stanah Hill Farm yesterday and clocked the cobble stone buildings. I will put it on the list with a '?' for date.

I always wanted to live at Rose cottage from being little and even used to push notes through the door incase they ever wanted to sell. Unfortunately it was pulled down quite a few years ago now and a large new property built on the site which they have inappropriately also called Rose Cottage. It was one of those places that looked just like it's name if you know what I mean. Shame.

  23. Hi not been down that way for a while, did'nt know it had been pulled down,It belonged to Mr &Mrs kirby who during WW2 took in 2 evacuees Bruce and Elizabeth, knew them both.I think their parents were killed in the Blitz,Bruce died & the cottage was left to Elizabeth, the story is that A local Builder and a farmer wanted to build on Lambs Hill and wanted an alternative entrance,
so he offered Elizabeth a Blank Cheque Plus a new house to sell it to him (Alledgedly)

Plannig consent was not applied for when it became obvious that there was no chance, Posibly thats why there are Car Boot Sales on Lambs Hiil (The Illawalla syndrome,) make it an eyesore then you'll get planning consent, lesser of two evils.

  24. Thanks James .. I have nicked that for the memory section (posted anonymously), hope you don't mind.

  29. I currently live at 1 Silcocks Cottages and have the original deeds. The original cottage was just No 1 and dates back about 250 years. Many alterations have been made over the years and as far as I can tell there are no cobble walls left(although some of the lines/angles of the original partslook like they must have followed them) The doors upstairs are all low (I'm 5'11" and have to lower my head to go through them)
No 2 was added towards the end of the 19th century. If you look at the rooflines then you can see the much lower ridge height of No 1 compared to No 2/3/4/5/6.
The cottages were split between the Silcocks children as a result of a will and were then sold to other owners on an adhoc basis.

  30. Hi John

Thanks for that. I didn't add them on the top 10 oldest as they were not original but if it's just the cobblestone walls which have gone and the rest is there .. on they go !
