Re;Marsh Farm article The bus to my old school Baines Grammar,I remember that in the 1930s there was only two bus routes running in Thornton,Cleveleys/Poulton direct via Victoria Rd,Thornton station,School Rd, Tarn Rd, Skippool Rd the Breck,Station Rd (Poulton)Poulton Square and return Hourly service. (incidentally Buses even Double Deckers Later) entered the Square from both directions. The other route was Thornton Station to Cleveleys via West drive, they were owned and run by 2 brothers called Snape, and kept behind Bill Brown house on Lawsons Rd,(Now a Carravan Site.)they ran until the late 1930s when Ribble bought the route off them,it was said that TB Silcock had to approve the contract because he owned part of Skippool road. I do know that there was a large gate outside Arnfield House opposite Illawalla back gate entrance
I.ve been looking at a WBC local plan Map and there seems to be some confusion regarding Stannah Hill Farm and Stannah House Farm. in fact there are 2 farms next to each other.Stannah House farm was Silcocks pig farm in my day now Adams Stables entrance off underbank,Stannah Hill Farm(I think it was previously known as the "The Drummonds"(Thats what it says on my copy of the deed Map) is just before you get to the corner of Underbank opposite the old white house. The old barn has recently been converted.
PS would like to see the deed map you have if it is small enough to scan and you don't mind sharing it. You never know when it will come in handy. Am trying to get together all the maps and plans of Thornton I can at the moment.
I dont have the map at the moment, its with my cousin the now owner of the farm,I only had a copy as i was geting planning permission for the barn conversion, she lives at Barton not on the Farm, next time i see her I will ask her if it would be OK.
Hi H.H., the farm marked in Red on the Stannah hill Farm entry is Stannah Villa Farm (Now a private residence) Stannah hill farm is farther up the hill on the opposite side of the road,(got a barn conversion). Stannah House Farm(now a Livery Stables) is next to it
Hi H.H.,The building you've marked is part of Stannah House Farm (Adams Stables)Stannah Hill Farm is the cluster of buildings to the left. The Dutch Barns to the rear of the Stables are also part of Stannah Hill Farm but these are not shown on the Map. As Andy Williams would say. "Your almost There"
i give up on this one , if i have ever seen that wall i don,t remember it.

Hi James
ReplyDeleteThanks for that .. all the info goes in my file until I pull it out so if it doesn't go on the site straight away it will soon.
Hi Mike
ReplyDeleteYou will have driven past it many times and probably not noticed it. I only took the pic for the fear of it being pulled down soon.

ReplyDeleteHi James
ReplyDeleteI might have marked the wrong one I think. I will have a look tomorrow and make sure it is right.
Hi James
ReplyDeleteI hadn't realised that there were two farms there. I have hopefully corrected all the details on the site now.

ReplyDeleteHi James
ReplyDeleteI will try again tomorrow .. I'm not doing very well at the moment am I ?!
Hi James
ReplyDeleteI think I might have got it now .. hopefully. There aren't many left I haven't coloured red now.
Thanks for asking your cousin .. no probs if she doesn't want it used. I'd be intersted in the field plan and boundaries.
