The Little Cottage ...

There is a little cottage (aptly called The Little Cottage) round the corner from me on Fleetwood Road, right opposite the junction of Trunnah Road. It is impossibly small and looks quite old. Its up for sale at the moment but the agents details don't give an age for the property. Does anybody have any ideas ? Theres actually two of them together but I don't know the name for the other one.

I have heard a rumour that the weather is going to be kind to us this Bank Holiday weekend .. fingers crossed. Don't forget it is Thornton Farmers Market on Saturday and on Sunday there is a Craft Fair at Marsh Mill

You've never been in our cottage after the cat's had his tea.

  2. This is one of those cottages where you can't see how people could stand up .. let alone there being a second floor. It makes it look old but from the views inside the house (up with Oystons) the beams don't look particulary original - I might be wrong.

  3. Hi, In Memories,"Burn naze and Thornton as a lad"the author mentions 2 cottages on the corner of Homes Rd, were the flats have been built. (one used as a coblers shop)But says they were both demolished,There is another Trunah cottage on Occupation Lane, An aquaintance of mine says that this one is not the original Trunah cottage, When I see him again I'll ask him if he knows anything.

  4. Hi James

I can definately vouch for the cottages on the corner of Holmes Road being demolished as I live in the apartments where they once stood :-)

I've put a picture in the main post now it really is ickle.

  6. Melanie,

I had a look at Yates's map of 1786 earlier and there were a cluster of cottages around that particular spot. Whether any of them were the ones in your photo or not I wouldn't like to put money on...but you never know.

  7. Hi Brian

I looked on the 1842 OS and like you say there seems to be cottages there but they seem to be set further back from the road. Mmm Interesting.

  8. Hi Past it today, seems to be to high and modern(Pos;Re-Built) for the type of old cottages around Thornton that i remember, the ones that were left standing in my young days were mostly all single story with tin roofs(probably replacing thatch) with the upper story in the roof space and windows in the gabler end. Examples were the cottages on the corner of Lambs rd were it met station Rd, Re,The house next door to the cottage you are interested in I'm pretty sure it used to be a Post office, i've asked several locals who agree, they said there used to be an old type letter box outside,
Not seen my other source yet he's lived on Lesley Ave; since 1939, and is interested in the history of Thornton' collects maps of the area,Very knowledgeable about Trunnah area. unfortunatly he has'nt got a PC, I'm pretty certain he will know something.
