The Quiz ...

Evening all. I've had a new postcard in from Andy which I will have on the site later tonight ..it needs a bit of touching up (don't we all!) It shows Woodlands Ave and is another view I've not seen before. There are a couple of shops on there and it must have changed beyond all recognition so will have to go and have a look see to try and spot whereabouts it was taken from.

Now for the Quiz ... and the answer is

The Gate posts of Sacred Heart Church Hall on Crabtree

In 1st place .. Brenda

In 2nd place .. Peter

Just for fun...

( a slightly rude joke .. no swearing ) fun

  9. Re; Woodlands, it seems the dim and distant past is catching up with me!!! The photo was taken from the corner of Rosendale North/Lawsons Rd corner is of the two shops previously mentioned next to Cliff Morris's farm (The hedge and the wall are were the farm House stands)if you look farther down on the left you can see the entrance to Kirby & Perrys.Incidentally my brother inlaw delivered milk to the first shop and was a friend of the family.

  11. Hi Micheal, I recall the carpet shop was Pete Sumners Bike shop he also charged battery's the acumerator type only way to power a radio a lot of houses in little thornton did'nt have electricity including my Nans (Gas lighting only) right up to the 50s. The Home Brew shop was Unsworths Chemist. Spar was a Cake Shop next door was a sweet and tobaconists. And Large's the grocers on Rosendale corner and Billy's market across the road
Spent many an evening in Sumners doorway with my girl friend after comming out of the Bug Hut,(The verona)There was a saying if a cat jumped on your knee in the bug hut dont stroke it, it'll be a rat.

the Spar was two house's with gardens and front wall, next on the left was Brewers Bakers and then Vin Duckets. on the corner of Rossendale was Large's shop and then became a spar shop and then an ironmongers for a while, next to that was shepards butchers and then nxt was a wool shop and then a sweet shop, where my fav person worked Hilda she was a lovely lady. I was always in that shop in the 60's and Jordans shop across the road.

  14. Hi Anon,I'm talking about the 30s/40s,not the 60s, dont know what was going on here in the 50s/60s I overseas in the Regular Army, Malaya and Korea,The way this country's turned out i think i was on the wrong side ! ! !
Pete Sumners was there before WW2 long before VinDucket.doubt if Vin had been born then. Pete used to have a hand primed petrol pump outside. Vin Ducket move to Anchorshome lane later . The shop on the corner of Rosendale as i have said was Larges had a row with her every day rgarding cow muck on the road.

  16. Hi Michael,Different sort of scooter when Pete Sumner was around. You put one foot on it and pushed with the other. My aunt Edna had boxes of old photos and old copies of the Thornton Cleveleys Gazette, they disappeared when she passed away, used to spend many happy hour with her remembering the past.
