Going with a Bang ...

After months of stripping out the old TPS main building/boilers at ICI will be demolished by explosion (sounds exciting) this Sunday 6th September at 11am.

I am reliably informed by James that you will be able to watch from the playing fields opposite the Burn Naze Hotel which is outside the exclusion zone.

The Chimney is pencilled in for Sunday 1st of November but will keep you posted nearer the time. Where's Fred Dibnah when you need him .. the best chimney feller that ever lived. I do hope that people find out about it or it will just be us lot looking shifty :-)

I don't know how I've missed it but I've had an email from Andy with 2 great old postcards attached which I've never seen before. One is of Church Lane (now Meadows Ave) and the other is of Raikes Road. I will get them on the site tonight so have a look later in the Gallery.

Now for the Quiz ...

Where In Thornton Am I ? .. and the answer is

St John the Evangelist on Stanah Road

In first place .. Mike
In 2nd place .. Mike P
In 3rd place .. John
In 4th place .. Brenda

  2. Hi Mike

Now you've been and gone and done it! Russ is dead jealous .. he loved Fred Dibnah. We still tape all his programs even though he's seen them all a hundred times.

The thing is he loved what he did and wanted to put a show on for the crowd as well as respecting the building itself. I think instead of all wearing a red rose on Sunday we should all bring a can of mild in his honour (brown paper bag optional)

  4. Hi, The Raikes Rd photo is of the first Rose Cottage,(Opposite the public footpath to Woodhouse Rd) owned in the 30s/40s by Mr & Mrs Kirby.Prior to that it was a Duck Farm One of my 1/2 cousin's father lived there. The Farm on the right at the bottom of the hill(Corner of Lambs Rd,)was farmed by another distant relative of mine Ernie Armistead.Incidentally there was another Rose Cottage on Raikes Rd,at the junction of Underbank and Raikes Rd,(Now demolished)My wife lived there in the 1940s knew it well.

  5. Sunday, eh? That's our usual excavating day, which means it'll be bucketting down. (If it isn't -- which it will be, but I'm being philosophical here -- you can give us a wave from the next field.)
