Thornton's Tithebarn ...

I have added some information on the website about the tithebarn in Thornton. I know it was there and I know roughly where it was but apart from that I have very little information to go on. I'm no expert in sizes but I think tithebarn field is less than 3 acres so their land would most likely have included other fields as well. Hopefully I will be able to add some more details and acurate dates at a later stage.

Now for the Quiz

Where in Thornton am I? ...

As it might be a difficult one I'll also throw in 10 questions you can ask .. that's in total not each :-D

Please ask your questions in the Comments below but send your guesses here as usual.

  1. I've no idea where the wall is, but I have a suspicion that the bricks might have originated in a brickfield near Layton cemetary. Not sure what gives me that idea, but...

  4. I've been getting my facts mixed up about the details of the tithbarn. I had mixed up Cockersand Abbey and Lancaster Priory which I have been correctly informed are 2 different things (quite obvious really). I've now corrected the website and have added a hunt for details of the grange on to my to do list.

  5. If your maps correct that fied is behind Silkcocks Cottages, We owned No1 upto App15 years ago,No1 and 2 were at one time the same my building,And several people including my daughter have seen a figure in a Monks habit at the top of the stairs, it has also been said that Priest escaping to would hide there prior toembarking at Skippool for France Theres a well worn footpath to the rear of the cottages that comes out by the River house. from My earliest recollection of that field was a drainage system being laid in the 1930s,sticks with me because tit was the first time i saw a steam engine and drag plough used.Incidentally theres a large and deep pit in the field one of the ones that would drain onto a site for a mill by the yacht club.

Hoo Hill, Blackpool is the Layton Cemetary/the Windmill Pub area...er...which is presumably where the bricks came from originally.
